Please Join Us - Sarasota MOAA

The Military Officers Association of Sarasota, Inc. is an affiliate of the Military Officers Association of America, the largest and most effective association in the country advocating for veterans, surviving spouses, and active-duty military members.

  • We are a member of the Sarasota County Veterans Commission, and together with the many local veterans’ organizations, support 70,000 veterans.
  • We are a member of the Florida Council of Chapters, an organization of 40 chapters with over 5,000 members.
  • We are the link between state and county representatives and national MOAA, advocating for all military services active duty personnel, and veterans’ benefits with our national and state legislators.

Our chapter is socially active and community oriented.  We sponsor cultural events and concerts together with the Sarasota POPS which are open to the community.  Our luncheons are held at Michaels on East as are special events. Our military gala in December is the highlight of the year.

Our luncheon programs feature speakers from military, city and county, and local organizations that hold interest for everyone.

We invite and welcome all uniformed service officers: retired, former or active duty, and surviving spouses of officers to our luncheons; ‘Meet and Greets’ held the second Wednesday of each month to remind us of the Happy Hour of old; and fun Yahoo (Young at Heart) events which can encompass anything from picnics, bowling, polo, kayaking, football games  to much more.

President’s Message

David Downer

Every MOAA chapter has several obligations. First, it’s obligated to observe MOAA National’s goals & objectives; secondly, it must take care of its members and thirdly, it needs to maintain good relations with various other local organizations. We have a great relationship with the Sarasota County Veterans Commission, the Sarasota National Cemetery and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, among others.

For our members, we have regular third Friday luncheons at Michael’s on East, one of the premier dining establishments in Sarasota. We are continuing a relationship with this restaurant after a span of over 25 years; it serves us well. We also have key members on our board who work tirelessly to accomplish our objectives.

We always seek input from our members regarding our speakers and wind up with some really great presentations, like a recent one by our own Carl Morris, CAPT, USN, who told us about the part people from Scotland played in Sarasota’s very early history. Terrific! Recommendations from our members will always be welcome and considered.

We work with High School Scholarships and support the JROTC programs at our local schools. We also expect to work closely with the State College of Florida in their Veterans Support program.
Our local resources include other colleges, like the Ringling College of Art & Design, and local leaders such as the Sarasota County Sherrif and the Mayor of Sarasota. We also have military-themed speakers to keep us informed about what is going on with our active duty personnel. National MOAA representatives occasionally appear on our programs as well.

Please enjoy our website and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us for more information. We invite all eligible persons to join us, enjoy our programs and fellowship and contribute to our goals, as appropriate.
